We were asked to recommend a good place to eat fish in Puerto Vallarta. Ha! It’s not that there are too many to name; truth being there are never too many, as they say. We will try listing a few here, from suggestions of friends who are avid fish eaters. Over the decades, we have rarely been disappointed, ordering fillets or whole fish (favorite is huachinango/red snapper). Beach restaurants buy from fishermen who come in with their catch right around dinner time, so freshness is primary on your table.
Joe Jack’s on Basilio Badillo always has a line-up in high season. Their upper level patio is nothing more than a glorified rooftop and the only way up is the narrow stairway in the back. It’s good exercise to get ready for the generous servings and less noisy than downstairs with lots of space. Joe Jack’s is a go-to restaurant for fish’n’chips in Puerto Vallarta and we suggest going early to avoid the rush. Eat at David’s on Aquiles Serdán serves hearty Americano comfort food, served with a Mexican flair. They also have excellent fish and chips, along with fish specials and a menu with daily specials.
Puerto Vallarta has as many good spots for fish as New York has for bagels. El Patrón, on Calle Las Américas at the north side of the stadium not only serves delicious fish platters, they do it artfully, with style. Service is excellent and we always order the yummy guacamole for starters. Jorge’s Hideaway Shrimp Shack, off the beaten track on Pilitas in Old Town, is loaded with atmosphere and we have friends who claim it is Five Star for fish and shrimp.
Down on the south shore of Puerto Vallarta La Choza de Toño (Tony’s Hideaway) is an old favorite for fresh fish and the aforementioned huachinango. In the little village of Mismaloya, you can’t miss it with its big palapa roof and Van Halen serenading over the speakers. We always request more traditional music and Tony is typically accommodating.
If you venture north of Puerto Vallarta, take a turn at Ixtapa and head down the road in the direction of Las Palmas. There you will find fish-feeds that will have you waddling home. Open-air restaurants like Mauricio’s and Jacalito have all-you-can-eat with an array of accoutrements, all delicious and filling. We’ve always been impressed by the cleanliness, efficiency and fantastic service. Going out to Ixtapa is an adventure in itself and we have found shopping in local shops after lunch is often a delightful experience. İBuen Provecho!
