Yikes! It’s Bikes!

Puerto Vallarta hosted a spectacular biking event the first week in May with a downhill course that trailed from the top of the city. In what we would consider a terrifying ride, competitors started by the large cross that overlooks the city, and tore down the hillside at crazy speeds, coming out on the streets below, shooting up ramps and high overhead to the cheers and awe of spectators. This was the first annual even of its kind and we are excited to welcome them back next year.

Biking in Puerto Vallarta is relatively new but it has taken off like a rocket with a variety of events. Weekend bikers can be found on routes short and lengthy, easy and vigorous. There are remote courses taking riders through jungle and small villages, way off the beaten path, so to speak. There are also itineraries within the city limits, into the small boroughs, or along the highway, veering through developments and roads that go nowhere. Races occur on a regular basis and local sponsors scramble to be represented.

Eco Ride seems to top everyone’s list for experienced guides for bike tours, with their astute knowledge of the terrain, equipment and surroundings. Their reviews are over the top with everyone we’ve spoken and locals recommend them, as well. Since we tend to like to do your research for you, if it’s adventure you’re seeking, this is the way to go. They don’t just provide maps; they have high quality bikes, helmets for all sizes, bottled water, and knapsacks to lend. They also offer hiking tours for those who aren’t fascinated with the idea of moving through Puerto Vallarta quite so fast. Eco Ride has a wide variety of trips for beginners to experts and they aren’t rough on the pocketbook. They cover an area that ranges from south to north of town and take a lot of pride in being very conscientious of the environment.

As kids, we all knew the freedom a first bike affords us. Imagine taking that a step further, riding in another country, through jungles where exotic animals live and vegetation grows, like nothing you’ve ever seen. It’s an eye-popping experience with lasting, magical memories.

Que es cómo es.
