What is Comida Corrida?
Comida Corrida in Puerto Vallarta is our favorite way to take a midday meal. Delicious, economical and healthy. Comida Corrida is sometimes served in a home, in the front parlor or kitchen, on their patio or sidewalk. It can be limited to fewer than six tables or have seating for many. A blackboard sandwich sign on the sidewalk might announce the day’s offerings, which change on a daily basis. Serving will begin shortly after noon and continue to around 4 pm or until they run out of food.
Agua fresca, popular in Puerto Vallarta, is the water of the day, and will be served and refilled throughout your meal. Agua fresca is water freshened with fruits such as pineapple (agua piña), hibiscus (Flor de Jamaica), or possibly horchata, a refreshing rice drink flavored with cinnamon and vanilla. The first course is soup; chicken, vegetable, and creamed varieties. The main course might be chile relleno, fish, tamales, enchiladas, fajita-like meat and veggies, often served with rice, beans or a combination of both. Some places also add a small salad. The final course is often a simple dessert (postre).
The price is amazing but considering you aren’t ordinarily paying for overhead that a normal restaurant would pass onto the customer, it makes sense. In Puerto Vallarta we have paid as little as $50 pesos for Comida Corrida and never over $70 pesos. We’re supporting the local economy, and often an industrious family.
There are many locations around town and in the outlying colonias (neighborhoods) like Pitillal, 5 de Diciembre, Versalles, Agua Azul. Some recommendations in El Centro are Dianitas, Adobes, Gabys, Flor and El Campanario. The Mercado Municipal upper level also has several small locations. We took our most recent Comida Corrida at El Companario, which is located on the corner of Hidalgo and Independencia, in sight of Our Lady of Guadalupe Cathedral. There was a line outside, but we were seated within minutes; El Companario is one of the larger places for Comida Corrida in Puerto Vallarta. We started out with Agua Maracuyá (passion fruit flavored water), which was
heavenly. Next they brought an ample bowl of scrumptious broccoli soup. Once we gobbled that up, we had a choice of two entrées; chicken or beef. There were two of us, so we had one each and sampled each another’s. We actually skipped dessert, since we were so full. Cost – $70 pesos. Right now that’s $3.44 US and $4.50 Canadian dollars. You can hardly beat that, even by staying home.
