Rodolfo Gómez
A great honor in Mexico is to have one’s name bestowed upon a street. Many of the well known streets in Puerto Vallarta are named for famous politicians and statesmen, José Venustiano Carranza Garza, for example, or Lázaro Cárdenas. One very familiar street is Calle Rodolfo Gómez, a block south of the famous Vallarta pier and home of one of the early hotels in Puerto Vallarta, San Marino, situated on the Malecón.
Rodolfo Gómez was a grandchild of Guadalupe Sánchez, the chief founder of Puerto Vallarta, then known as Las Peñas. Rodolfo Gómez was one of ten children of José Concepcion Gómez Michel and MarÃa del Rosario Sánchez Castillo, born on June 15, 1895. As well as serving as Mayor of Puerto Vallarta from 1939 to 1940, Rodolfo Gómez was the president of the Committee for City Hall funding. He was long remembered for leaving those coffers bulging with a large amount of money ($25,000 pesos) for that period of time.
The entire town mourned his death on December 18, 1950, as he was loved by everyone and a special friend to local fishermen and sailors. His funeral service was held at City Hall and an honor guard was assigned to maintain watch over him.
For many years the street named for Rodolfo Gómez has been a very desired location for a variety of businesses. Sandwiched between Calles Francisca Rodriquez and Pulpito, it was the original center of Old Town, bordered by Olas Altas, the gateway to wonderful beach restaurants and entertainment for all tastes in Puerto Vallarta.
Little did Guadalupe Sánchez realize how his beloved Las Peñas would grow and become a major global tourist attraction with streets named after his grandchildren and Guadalupe Sánchez, himself, the very street where you will find Café des Artistes Bistro Gourmet, Restaurants Pipi’s and SÃ, Señor.
Que es cómo es.
