Gender Equality in Puerto Vallarta
Puerto Vallarta has always been a welcoming town for all people. When we originally began to travel in Mexico, it was very refreshing to meet openly gay people who had been embraced by their families. Though not every Mexican we knew had this experience, many had moved to Puerto Vallarta, a place they felt safe to be themselves. The gay population in Puerto Vallarta has grown and we are now known as a gay destination! The annual Pride parade that attracts enormous crowds is a good example of this acceptance. Entertainment in Puerto Vallarta has expanded to venues all over town, and drag shows have risen to the same classy amusement normally seen in the likes of Las Vegas, New York, and Europe.
We are now delighted to announce the recent opening of the Office of Gender Equality in Puerto Vallarta. This last week, at the request of the large LGBT community, a certified office has been opened at Lázaro Cárdenas Park. Over the years, attention to equality has increased and much of this has resulted from pressure from the gay community, plus the rise of LGBT tourism, which has had a major impact on the economy, local and national. According to the Mayor of Puerto Vallarta, Arturo Dávalos Peña, advancement in diverse citizenship has been a focused goal; to continue to keep Puerto Vallarta a friendly and safe location so anyone can visit, walk down the streets in daytime or after dark and feel safe and welcome. The Mayor reminded us that it has been over a year in which Mexico made same-sex marriage legal, and our chapels and wedding venues have reflected this law. Some of the most beautiful and charming nuptials we have attended have been the product of couples who were finally able to tie the knot after being together for years, in some cases, decades. During the inauguration of the Office of Gender Equality, the mayor stated that Puerto Vallarta City hall intends to respect all human rights, with the intentions of guiding and assisting the city to have a peaceful and inclusive environment for all. Guests, residents and locals will have the same privileges, protections and support, regardless of nationality, race, religion, sexual orientation and gender identity. The mayor signed into policy a proclamation stating the
atmosphere of Puerto Vallarta to be one of [hospitality, friendliness and high standards of quality to all its visitors.]
Que es cómo es.
